The Student and The Teacher
The student said, “When I grow up I will be a most intelligent man. If only you will teach me.”
The teacher said, “I can only help to reveal something that is already inside you.”
The teacher did not begin to teach wisdom to the student, but taught him faith and lovingness. The teacher guided the student not to the house of wisdom. The teacher guided the student to the threshold of his own mind.
The teacher taught the student saying, “Listen to the astronomer speak of understanding space, but he cannot give you that understanding. The musician may sing to you of the rhythms, but he cannot give you the ear to hear the key or the voice to sing the song. And the mathematician can tell you of calculus, but he cannot take you there.”
The student said, “Then what will I learn?”
The teacher said, “Each of us stands alone in his learning of knowledge and the understanding of how to use it.”
