Do You Remember?

Do you remember that there are those who are not here? They are out of sight of their homes and living in fear. The people push through their daily grinds. Do you have a dollar for a beer? I would ask for food but I don’t care. Times are hard so why should I lie.

Do you remember that kid who went off to war? He thought that his life would be better when he returns to these shores. Don’t remember his name or what his face looked like. To busy thinking of myself instead of the ones that die in the fight.

Better him than me who should go to war. He chose to leave instead of cleaning floors. They promised him a gem upon his return. They told him that the best things in life but nothing is free. They told him to go to war and later get his degree.

So he traveled to world’s other side. Fighting in a place where none can survive. He’s living in a hole dug out from the earth. Covering his ears from the blast and the dirt. Now he is expendable and they don’t call him by name.

Now he is an embarrassment and a shame to the people who won’t do the same. Ignored at home and far off he offends. He hopes that help will arrive before the end. Do you remember that kid who went off to war? He chose to fight instead of cleaning floors. When he returns what will he find. No hero’s welcome only the daily grind.
